Dharmapuri District Profile

  • Dharmapuri district is bounded by Krishnagiri district in the North, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts in the East, Salem district in the South and R.Cauvery in the west.
  • The District lies between 11º47'40’’N to 12º33’40’’ N Latitude, 77º33'30’’E to 78º40'00’’E Longitude and has an areal extent of 4498 sq.km.
  • There are 8 Blocks, 251 Villages and 3445 Habitations in the District.

Physiography and Drainage

  • Major rivers of the district are the Cauvery River and Ponnaiyar. R. Cauvery originating from Karnataka State enters the district at Hogenekkal and drains into the Mettur Dam in Salem district.
  • Ponnaiyar is the other major river draining the district and is ephemeral in nature. It originates from Nandhi hills in Karnataka, enters Tamil Nadu west of Bagalur and flows almost in a southeasterly direction till it reaches Doddampatti from where it takes an easterly course.
  • Pambar, Vaniyar, and Kallar are the important tributaries of Ponnaiyar draining the eastern part of the district whereas the Chinnar and Markandeya Nadhi drain the northern part of the district.

Sustainability:

With a view to enhancing the Sustainability of the drinking water sources, recharge structures are being implemented by TWAD Board under various State and Central Government assistance. .
