Hosur was constituted as a Selection Grade Town Panchayat in the year 1962 and then upgraded to Second Grade Municipality in the Year 1992 vide G.O.(MAWS) No.5 Dtd.15.01.1992. In the year 1998 it has been upgraded to Selection Grade Municipality vide G.O.(MAWS) No.85 Dtd. 22.05.1998. In 2011 Vide Go.no.127 dt.08.09.2011 town panchayat Mathigiri, Village Panchayats Zuzuvadi,Mookandapalli,Avalapalli, Chennathur was included in Hosur Municipality and later upgraded to Special Grade municipality vide G.O.Ms.No.62, Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MA.5), 25th June 2012.
Hosur Municipality is located in the latitude 12° 44’, Longitude 77° 49’ , Elevation 861.00m in the Krishnagiri-Bangalore Highway (NH-7) and NH-207. Hosur is 48 km from Krishnagiri and 32 km from Bangalore. This is a major industrial town in north Tamil Nadu with growing nature.
The present area of the Municipality with added area is 72.41 sq.km with 45 wards comprising 11.71 sq.km of core area and 60.70 sq.km of added area with a total population of 2,44,518 as per 2011 census. As added areas were only panchayats earlier, the existing infrastructure available is in-capable to serve the population. As water supply is one of the primary key indicative factors for the economic development, it has been decided to take up the water supply system to the above added area and also improvements to the existing distribution system to ensure daily and equitable water supply for the entire municipality area. To balance the above issue the Municipal Administration has engaged M/s. TWIC, Chennai as a Consultant for the preparation of DPR for the improvements to distribution system to this Municipality, accordingly an estimate at a cost of Rs.87.91 Crores has been prepared. Further the works has been entrusted to TWAD Board, a pioneer department in the Water Supply front under Government of Tamilnadu.

The other source of water supply for the municipality is well field sources and surface water. A part of water supply in Hosur Municipality is from South Pennar River at Kumudapalli. There are 2 booster stations installed in the years 1980 and 1999 for drawing water from 7 bore wells located on the sides of South Pennar River at Kumudapalli and being supplied to 10LL OHT at Kamaraj Nagar.
The pump sets of 20HP to 60 HP are installed in these booster stations. The quantity water supplied by this source is about 2.0 MLD for 8 hrs working. For future need the pumping hours shall be increased to 24 hours, by which total 6.50 MLD can be supplied.

Proposed Distribution system:
The objective of performing a detailed analysis is to obtain the required distribution piping for the rated ultimate stage water demand. Accordingly the distribution network is reclassified into 39 water distribution Zones based on the contour of the town, out of which 14 zones has been taken up for execution under phase I. The proposed distribution zones will have 574.15 Km length of water supply distribution network which is inclusive of 97.70 Km of existing network and 137.38 km of replacement network and 339 Km of new proposed network. A total of 145.702 Km of network has been proposed in Phase I and the remaining shall be proposed subsequently in Phase II.The zone wise details of proposed distribution system is shown in the table

Proposed Service Reservoirs:
Under the present project, it is proposed to divide the corporation area into 39 distinct water supply zone based on the terrain/profile of the city and the population distributed. Each water supply zones shall be served by Service Reservoir either existing or the new proposed reservoirs. The ward/streets to be fed from each service reservoir have been identified in consultation with ULB officials.
The total storage requirement for the entire municipality for intermediate and ultimate period is 215.39 LL and 277.41LL. Though existing storage capacity is about135.2 LL, an additional storage of 63.50 LL is being proposed in the Phase I scheme as immediate requirement with the individual capacity of service reservoir shown in Table 5.4 and the remaining shall be proposed subsequently in Phase II.
