Prefatory:

Virudhunagar District consists of 7 Municipalities, 9 Town Panchayats and 1,891 Rural Habitations (including 263 new Habitations) in 450 Villagel Panchayats.

This Project area comprises of 755 Rural habitations in Sattur, Vembakottai,Sivakasi, Virudhunagar , Watrap, Srivilliputhur and Aruppukottai Panchayat Unions in Virudhunagar District.

Present Water Supply Scenario:

At present, most of the Habitations are getting water from local and near by Bore Well Sources. Some of the habitations have been provided with water supply from Infiltration Wells in River Vaipar, River Arjuna, Gundar and River Vaigai. Moreover, the Rivers mentioned above are not perennial. The present level of service to the rural areas is 10 lpcd.

Need For The Proposal:

In Virudhunagar District, all the existing Bore wells and Open Wells are not sustainable. The Rivers flowing within this District are also not perennial. In order to enhance the level of service as per the norms, it is necessitated to formulate the above CWSS with River Tamiraparani as source.

Population and Requirement:

The population has been forecasted for the base year (2012), intermediate (2027) and ultimate stages as 5.43 Lakhs, 5. 98 Lakhs and 6.52 Lakhs respectively.

Water requirement has been worked out as 21.03 MLD and 22.87 MLD for the intermediate (2027) and ultimate (2042) stages, respectively by adopting pro-rata of 40 lpcd including the existing sustainable supply of 10 lpcd for Rural habitation.

Description of Proposal:

It is proposed to tap surface water of 22.87 mld in River Tamiraparani near Seevalaperi by providing an Off-take arrangement on the upstream side of Check Dam proposed to be constructed by PWD as Deposit Work. Water thus tapped will be gravitated through a Gravity main of 500m length (800mm DI pipe) to the proposed Collection Sump cum pump house. From this Sump Raw water will be pumped through a pumping main of 700m length (600mm DI pipe) to the proposed Treatment Unit of capacity 21.03 mld. After treatment, the water from the clear water sump will be pumped to 2 Nos. of intermediate boosters, 3 main sumps and then to 156 rural sumps to feed the beneficiaries. The total length of transmission main is 1354.21km. (712mm MS pipe, 600mm to 200mm-DI pipe and 140mm to 50mm-Pvc pipe). In addition to the existing 978 Service reservoirs, 13 Nos are newly proposed for the habitations having no service reservoirs. The water collected in the Service Reservoirs will be distributed to the Public through 1024 km of existing Distribution system and 3.4 km of proposed Distribution system.

Cost:

Administrative Sanction accorded in GO.MS.NO.165/MA&WS (WS2) Department dt.11.8.10 for Rs.234 Crore. Subsequently, the Detailed Project Report was reviewed by the Third Party Independent Consultant engaged by TNUIFSL and revised to Rs.220.45 Crore to install and Rs.6.41 Crore to maintain annually.

Funding:

The Scheme has been implemented with the funds from TN Government share and ULB contribution

Present Stage:

At present 94% of the works have been completed and the expenditure incurred is    Rs.215.79 Crore (92%)    and further works are in progress. All works will be completed by 08/2018 and after 6 months Trial run the scheme will be put into the beneficial use of the public.
