Tsunami Relief Measures
On 26th December 2004 Tsunami has devastate the South East Coastal Areas in Tamil Nadu. Due to this, people mostly fisher folk who suffered the most damage in terms of enormous loss of life, housing, livelihoods, household assets etc. Drinking water sources becomes saline. Safe drinking water leads the list of amenities to be provided. Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board took care of it without any loss of time and provided water and Sanitation facilities to the Tsunami affected coastal Districts by utilizing the funds provided by State Government, Government of India, Asian Development Bank and World Bank.
Providing Water Supply to Tsunami Affected Areas
a) Calamity Relief Works with GOTN Fund:
In view of providing immediate and permanent measures towards Water Supply in 5 Coastal Districts viz. Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli and also providing sewerage system in 2 coastal Districts viz. Nagapattinam and Cuddalore under Calamity Relief Fund, an amount of Rs.14.25 crore was released in G.O. Ms. No.250 Revenue N.C.III Department dated 2.5.2005. All the works have been completed and the expenditure so far made is Rs.12.51 crore.
Details of Works:
- Water Supply through Lorries – 4 Nos.
- To make the affected water supply system functional–5 Nos.
- Water supply to temporary shelters – 2 Nos.
- Water supply to Permanent shelters – 110 Nos.
- Sanitation facilities to permanent shelters – 2 Nos.

b) ARWSP with GOI fund: In view of providing immediate and permanent measures towards Water Supply in 4 Coastal Districts viz. Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Thoothukudi and Nagapattinam Districts, an amount of Rs.8.50 cores was sanctioned in GOI Lr. No. W/ 11019/ 31/ 2004/ TMI dt. 9.2.2005. All the works have been completed and the expenditure so far made is Rs.8.36 crore.

Tsunami Relief Works under TEAP with ADB Assistance and sustainable water supply for all the Tsunami affected towns and rural habitations in 10 coastal Districts, the Government in G.O. Ms. No.597/Revenue (NC.IV.I) Department dated 24.10.2005 and G.O. Ms. No.49/Revenue (NC.IV.I) Department dated 30.01.2008 have sanctioned a sum of Rs.84.37 crore under TEAP with ADB assistance for 41 schemes comprising 36 Water Supply Schemes and 5 Recharge Structures. In this one Recharge Structure i.e. Sub Surface Dyke across river Paravanar in Cuddalore District has not been taken up and the PWD authorities have been informed to take up the work with Government of Tamil Nadu Fund.
All the 40 schemes taken up have been completed at an Expenditure of Rs.80.93 crore.

Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme Funded by GOI
For providing power pump schemes in Tsunami affected areas in 10 Coastal Districts, the GOI is funding Rs.16.127 crores vide G.O. Ms. No. 382/ Rev.(NC.IV.I) Department dt. 26.6.2008 and G.O. Ms. No.546/Revenue (NC.IV.I) Department dated 18.9.2008.
Total Nos. of power pump schemes taken is 344 Nos. and all works have been completed. Expenditure made so far is Rs.14.06 crore.

Providing Sanitation Facilities Under Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project (ETRP)
For providing Sanitation facilities to Tsunami affected people of Town Panchayat and Municipalities in 6 Tsunami affected Coastal Districts Rs.30.00 crore has been allotted under Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project with World Bank Assistance in G.O. Ms. No.333 Revenue (NC.IV.I) Department dated 26.06.2007 and G.O. Ms. No. 61 dated 07.02.2008. 16 packages covering 50 permanent shelters will be provided with Sanitation facilities. As on date works in 10 packages (26 shelters) have been completed. In 6 packages (20 shelters) work is under progress. For one shelter (Package 3 – Slice-2) preclosure proposal sent to World Bank due to public objection.
In Package 13 (Slices 3, 4 and 5) rebid proposal was sent to World Bank. Expenditure made upto February 2011 is Rs.18.74 crore.
